Cómo Ahorrar el 4 de Julio

How to Save on the 4th of July

By Antonia Wang

The 4th of July is one of the most important American holidays since it commemorates the Independence of the United States. Following are some ways you and your family can save money as you celebrate living in the land of the free.

BBQ:

If you plan to stay home, hosting a BBQ and inviting others is great fun. Make it a pot-luck! Ask your guests to bring salad, meat or their own drinks. Most guests will be happy to contribute and you will spend less entertaining. If cleaning up afterwards is a concern, you may consider having the BBQ at a local park that offers grills and free admission and distributing the cleaning responsibilities among the attendants. Kids and adults are sure to enjoy the open areas!

Buy in bulk:

If you are cooking for a big group, consider buying items at a discount store or buying bulk at a membership club. Items you can buy in bulk are: meat, vegetables, bread, drinks, fruit and other dessert. Also, napkins, disposable plates and cutlery. If you don't have a local club membership, ask your friends who do if you can tag along on one of their shopping trips. Freeze whatever is perishable as needed, before or after the party.

Free Events:

Most cities have free 4th of July events you can attend with your family. Car shows, outdoor festivals, parades and firework shows are among the many events happening in most cities for the 4th of July. Ask coworkers and friends what they will be doing to get other free event ideas. You can also run a web search for "4th of July 2012 events in (your city)". At the end of the day, you may be also be able to catch a firework shows on TV.

Local/State parks:

If you would like to leave the house but do not have a big budget for travel, consider visiting a local or state park. Most have campgrounds you can reserve ahead of time and offer beaches, hiking and biking trails for enjoying nature and exercising. Many camp sites come with grills. Parks often offer additional activities for adults and junior programs for kids. If you decide to go camping, you might need appropriate gear and will be buying/cooking your own food. Visit nps.gov/findapark to find a state park near you.

Traveling:

The 4th of July weekend is a busy travel time. If you are looking to travel around that time, El Poder es Tuyo recently published some good tips on how to save. These include how to save on air travel, driving and lodging and using credit card points. Click here to read the full article.

Shopping:

Most stores will offer Independence weekend sales. This is a great opportunity to buy items you currently need at a discount. These include school clothing, home goods and even car sales. However, keep in mind that you should not buy an item simply because it is on sale. Buy the things you need and can afford based on your budget and future goals.

Enjoy!
